Tennessee state investigator’s grandfather kept skin of lynching victim

William Sewell was an emergency medical service investigator assigned to investigate a complaint filed by of a Black man involving the Algood Fire Department in Putnam County. Shun Mullins who filed the complaint over services rendered to his mother, said Swell sought to intimidate him out of following through on the complaint with tales of skin from a Black lynching victim being saved by a lynch mob of which Sewell’s grandfather kept as a family souvenir passed down to future generations.
