The conservative website National Review and conservative bloggers are again attempting to redefine racism this time over the defacement of a Black Republican’s campaign billboard. Tim Cavanaugh, a writer for the National Review claims that the defacement of a billboard where Florida Republican Gloreatha Scurry-Smith’s face was painted white was an act of racism.

While Smith for her part has said that she does not know who committed the act of vandalism and did not point any fingers at anyone, conservatives like Cavanaugh are insinuating that a Black person must have committed the crime.

How Cavanaugh arrived at this conclusion is a mystery being that the police have not investigated the incident and no one has stepped forward to claim responsibility.

Let us assume that Cavanaugh is correct in his assumption even though he is not but let us assume that he is. Would a Black person insinuating that a Black Republican who worked on behalf of Governor Rick Scott is white-identified as Glo Smith took the defacement to mean, an act of racism?

Not according to the dictionary which states,

“the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races” and “prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior.”

If conservatives are going to blame Black people for a crime against another Black person, they might want to look up the definition of racism before they describe the act as such. It is also makes them look hypocritical since they claim to deplore people using the race card but in reality they play the race card all the time when it suits them.

On whether or not Glo Smith is white identified, I cannot say, I would need more evidence than her political party affiliation to make such a determination.

However, for the record, Black people cannot practice racism against members of their own group unless they are acting as an agent on the behalf of suspected racist white people. I have come to call this type of racist behavior by Black people proxy racism.

Update: Fox News has now joined the effort to spread confusion about racism and what it is by calling it an act of “Horrific Racism“.

“If you do not understand White Supremacy (Racism) What it is, and how it works everything else that you understand, will only confuse you” — Mr. Neely Fuller Jr.
