The Context of White Supremacy hosts the second study session on legendary poet, author, scholar, mother, sexual abuse survivor and Victim of White Supremacy Dr. Maya Angelou. Dr. Angelou transitioned in May of 2014. We felt an obligation to recognize her published counter Racist efforts. We’ll investigate her 1969 autobiographical novel, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. The text candidly examines Racism and recants her Arkansas childhood. Our first session covered Dr. Angelou’s painful desires, fantasies of being White. Paradoxically, she declares that she thought of “whitefolks” as alien, non-human creatures because of their absence of melanin and sadistic conduct. The Christian church will play a dominant role for the duration of the text; the novel opens during an Easter Sunday service and recounts several dramatic scenes that take place in the house of the Lord. As we read, continue to ponder on why many White people seem to adore and champion this book.
