Rev. Al Sharpton says NAN not involved in picking new US Attorney General

Reverend Al Sharpton, the leader of the civil rights organization National Action Network and host of MSNBC’s Politics Nation, was reported by many news outlets as saying his organization would be involved in helping President Obama pick a successor to US Attorney General Eric Holder who announced his upcoming resignation.

If true, it would seem totally inappropriate to make this information public and would make it rather difficult for whoever is hand picked for the job to obtain confirmation by the Senate even though Democrats currently hold the majority of US Senate seats. Any person nominated by President Obama will face an uphill battle in the confirmation process and will be demonized by conservative media.

However, Reverend Sharpton has issued a statement to Business Insider that states, “We did not say we are in the decision making. We are in conversation to reach out to them to have meetings about what we want to see in a successor” Business Insider nor any of the other outlets that picked up the story listed a source for their information that NAN was involved in picking a new US Attorney General and simply attributed the comment to Sharpton. There was nothing on NAN’s website stating anything about being involved in any process and if the statement was made on Sharpton’s radio broadcast of “Keeping It Real”, it was not mentioned as the source.
