Newark Gateway Center to Host Black History Celebration Featured Speaker Alan Laird Unveils 18th Century Relic

On Monday, February 2, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. the curtain will be drawn to reveal the Alan Laird Collection. Curator Valarie Thurman in collaboration with The Living Ground Ministries (TLGM) will present a month long cultural display of prints, artifacts, relics and keepsakes for public viewing. The collection can be viewed all day, February 2nd – 28th at Two Gateway Center on the main concourse located at 283-289 Market St., Newark, New Jersey.

On Friday, February 27, 2015 starting at 9:00 a.m. a day long closing ceremony will take place. This event will feature the annual Black History Marketplace, where a select group of community organizations, corporations, small businesses, and entrepreneurs will showcase a variety of products and services. Also featured,“Cash for Knowledge” a unique educational contest, created several years ago by Howard Scott, founder of The Living Ground Ministries (TLGM). The aim of this contest is to motivate youth between the ages of 8 and 15, to study, and correctly answer historical questions to earn a cash award. “Nothing is more rewarding than to see smiles upon those youngsters who receive cash for knowledge,” said Howard Scott, event organizer.

A number of prominent guest speakers, will make appearances throughout the day. In addition, those in attendance will receive a copy of Reflections Black History magazine. The 60-page, full color publication focuses on messages of hope and healing, pride and joy, strength and courage. “Its pages will send a message not only to African descendants but also to the entire melting pot of vast multi-cultural ethnicities that is America. Struggle, sacrifice, and triumphs are universal experiences that touch us all. Understanding our differences encourages unity and goodwill which is the primary focus of this annual celebration and publication,” said Twin Vision
