Two Supreme Court Justices came out against mass incarceration this week. Justices Anthony Kennedy and Stephen Breyer spoke before a House Appropriations Subcommittee, and mirrored the sentiments of abolitionists everywhere, whether they knew it or not. The Justices said straight up- “the American criminal-justice system is too harsh, locks up too many people for too long and does so at an ultimate cost to public safety.”

Willacy County fallout has city officials stumped, in terms of coming up with any new ideas for generating revenue. The word coming out of Willacy is get the prison reopened- its all we have to offer.

California claims they have met the court’s order to reduce inmate overpopulation to 137% over capacity. Its 5 years later, and with new legislation like Prop 47– which was created by direct democracy, as the people put the measure on their ballot and then voted for it overwhelmingly- the state has also made major moves to ship inmates out of state. Is this really “reducing” overcrowding?
