NBC Connecticut

Summary: Classes were canceled at the liberal Connecticut College Monday after racist and terrorist graffiti was painted inside a building on campus over the weekend. Connecticut College is a private liberal arts college located in New London, Connecticut. This follows a incident just over 10 days ago in Indiana where a sixth grade Black female was called racial slurs and a threatening racist note left in her locker.

— The Russian Football Union has appointed its first dedicated anti-racism official in an effort to crack down on discrimination ahead of the World Cup. RFU president Nikolai Tolstykh says Alexei Tolkachev has been named “anti-racism inspector.” It was not immediately clear what powers have been given to Tolkachev, who already deals with racism as the RFU’s head of safety and fan outreach.

The Supreme Court will hand down a ruling later this year on whether a state can stop its citizens from purchasing specialty license plates featuring the Confederate flag. The case is a complex and interesting one that raises all sorts of questions about free speech. But while the court has been grappling with the limits and mandates of the First Amendment, the outside world has been engaged in a different, less esoteric discussion.

Liverpool legend John Barnes claims racism is the reason he hasn’t been given another crack at management
ALL Sports

Former England international John Barnes claims he will struggle to get back into management because of the colour of his skin. The former Celtic, Jamaica and Tranmere Rovers boss has been out of work since leaving Prenton Park after just four months in charge in 2009. And Barnes feels it is unlikely an opportunity to return will arise. “A white manager loses his job and gets another job, he loses his job, he gets another job. Very few black managers can lose their job and get another job,” he tells ITV4’s John Barnes: Sports Life Stories programme, which airs on Tuesday.

(ENAR) Ireland’s campaign alongside Ms Logan, the director of ENAR Ireland, Shane O’Curry, said that while some workplaces have excellent structures to deal with racist bullying and harassment, others don’t. He thinks racism is a fact of everyday life, and that African men and Muslim women are being targeted the most. “Some workplaces just haven’t adapted to dealing with people from other minority backgrounds,” Mr O’Curry said. The ENAR Ireland campaign aims to particularly tackle the under-reporting of racism.

Simineri: Racism and Mascots
The Dartmouth

This spring break, I had the privilege of working with the vibrant, vast Native American community in Denver alongside 11 other members of the College as part of alternative spring break program. We went to the state’s capitol and watched the proceeding of House Bill 1165 — a bill that would create a subcommittee of Native Americans to review Native American mascots used by public schools and determine whether to ban a mascot’s use, at a penalty of $25,000 per month for noncompliance. Fortunately, the bill passed — but only by a narrow 6-5 vote. While this bill is a critical milestone, it is too little for such a significant issue and has taken far too long to be created.
