Toni Morrison On When She’ll Know Racism Is Over

Morrison is best known for novels set in the past; her most acclaimed, 1987’s Beloved, takes place in the aftermath of American slavery. But, in her most recent sit-down, with Britain’sTelegraph, she shares her thoughts on the very recent present. “People keep saying, ‘We need to have a conversation about race,'” she tells the paper. “This is the conversation. I want to see a cop shoot a white unarmed teenager in the back. And, I want to see a white man convicted for raping a black woman. Then when you ask me, ‘Is it over?’, I will say yes.” Her statement references the racially charged shootings of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin,Walter Scott, and others. But, Morrison is clear she doesn’t see racism as the driving force behind injustice, so much as economic inequality.  Read more…

Ashby: Toronto’s fight against racism starts from within

Toronto named its first black police chief this week. Mark Saunders inherits a host of problems born from a city riven by racial, economic, and political tensions. Not least of these is the practise of carding, which allows police officers to randomly detain and question passers-by, even if they are not suspected of anything in particular, and take down their information. Carding has a long and storied history in Toronto (in New York City, it is known as ”stop and frisk”). That history has long been biased against young, black men: in some neighbourhoods, they’re 17 times more likely to be carded than others. Even when the pace of carding drops, the number of young, black men picked up by Toronto police officers rises. Read more…

They spent the night at the Econo Lodge Motel. Odum and his students say the staff at the motel antagonized them that night, calling the students the ‘N word.’ Read more…
