The Context of White Supremacy hosts our debut study session on the autobiography of Assata Shakur. Formerly JoAnne Chesimard, Shakur is a veteran of the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army, a convicted cop killer, an escaped felon, the first woman ever placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist List, and an author. As President Obama has negotiated to improve relations with Cuba, Shakur’s extradition has remained a key talking point. Her autobiography provides an understanding of her evolving concept of Racism and what she should to solve this problem. The book offers equal time to her account of being incarcerated and shackled for a crime she maintains she did not commit. Listeners should contrast this narrative with our recent study of Minister Malcolm X.
