The Context of White Supremacy hosts our second study session on the autobiography of Assata Shakur. Formerly JoAnne Chesimard, Shakur was actively involved in the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, convicted of killing New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster, an escaped felon, the first woman ever placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist List, and a writer. As President Obama labored to improve relations with Cuba, Shakur’s extradition has remained a key talking point. Last week’s segment began with Shakur recounting being shot, shackled and tortured by cops who bragged about being Racist while calling her nigger. She believed Whites coerced a black nurse to fleece her for information while she was in her hospital bed. Shakur remained silent, codified. She emphasized that her black grandparents emphasized and demanded #BlackSelfRespect – which fueled her dedication to countering Racism. Poignantly, Assata recalls the warmth and love of her mother telling her that she made her proud. We’ll keep an eye out for the influence of Christianity.
