The Context of White Supremacy hosts our third study session on the autobiography of Assata Shakur. Formerly JoAnne Chesimard, Shakur is a veteran of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, the convicted killer of New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster, an escaped felon, the first woman ever placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist List, and a writer. The diplomatic talks to improve the United State’s relationship with Cuba have prompted speculation about the possibility of Shakur’s extradition. Last week’s segment featured an epic moment of self-reflection when Shakur recalls the verbal abuse black children waged on each other; adding “Black” to any insult intensified the damage. As a child she was transfixed by television and adored Elvis Presley. During her New Jersey confinement she was isolated from other inmates and denied access to appropriate medical care. Assata continues to model the conduct of a professional counter-racist soldier. She methodically selects the best course of action for her given circumstances. At times she’s silent. At times she’s counter-violent. Keep an eye out for the influence of Christianity.
