The Context of White Supremacy hosts our fourth study session on the autobiography of Assata Shakur. Formerly JoAnne Chesimard, Shakur was an active member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, convicted killer of New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster, an escaped felon, the first woman ever listed on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist List, and a author. She continues to be the focus of controversy as a Marquette University mural featuring her image was derided and removed this week. Our previous session detailed Assata’s youthful hijinks as she ran away from home as a young teen. Thankfully, her immature decision-making didn’t carry a heavy penalty; she made it back to her mom safely. She continued to outline her inhumane treatment in greater confinement and how the other black prisoners had been conditioned to think of her as a hulking, black super predator. The strain of Racism disrupted her relationship with her attorney and aunt, Evelyn Williams; the latter eventually discontinued legal representation of her niece. And we got a brief jailhouse romance between she and Kamau. Keep an eye out for the influence of Christianity.
