Activists associated with Black Lives Matter and Join Campaign Zero met with Democratic Presidential contender Hillary Clinton on Friday with hopes of informing her platform on racial and criminal justice issues.

Black Talk Radio on Twitter which is associated with the New Abolitionist Movement via Twitter asked activist Deray McKesson to ask Hillary Clinton to explain the private prison lobbyists raising money for her campaign and if she still supports what abolitionists call legalized 21st century slavery and human trafficking.

Mr. McKesson reported after the meeting on MSNBC’s “Live with Thomas Roberts” that Clinton “did come out and say she wants to end private prisons.” He added, “She hasn’t released a platform yet about racial justice or criminal equity or criminal justice, so I’m hopeful that this conversation will inform that platform.”

The Clinton’s have long ties to the private prison industry and more than any administration since Reagan opened the door to privatized federal prisons, Bill Clinton’s administration expanded the use of private prisons which turned into a multi-billion dollar a year industry. Hillary Clinton saying that she will end private prisons is a huge deal given the history but she has not yet come up with a plan to explain how she will do that. Perhaps this plan will emerge when she finally does offer a criminal justice policy for her platform.

However, Clinton’s main rival in the Democratic party for the presidential nomination Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) along with Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.), Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) and Rep. Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.) have introduced bills in Congress to ban private prisons, reinstate the federal parole system and eliminate quotas for the number of immigrants held in detention. Hillary Clinton has yet to comment on the Justice Is Not For Sale Act 2015 which also would regulate banking and telecommunications service for prisoners and their families. The corporate media seems to not be interested in discussing the bill in depth either.

This is still a good sign in the movement to abolish private prisons and jails in the United States which contribute to world’s largest prison population on planet earth.
