1456528417768 The Context of White Supremacy hosts the eighth study session on Randy Roberts and Johnny Smith’s 2016 release, Blood Brothers: The Fatal Friendship Between Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X. Ali passed away months after the book was published. Roberts and Smith, both Suspected Racists, present their interpretation of the genesis and abrupt end to Ali and Minister Malcolm’s bond and how their friendship evaporated as Minister Malcolm’s exile from Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam became permanent. Unfortunately, Ali was not able to repair things before Malcolm’s 1965 assasination. Last week’s session explored Ali’s transition from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali after he captured the heavyweight crown. Elijah Muhammad officially changed Ali’s name and welcomed him as a member of the NOI. This coincided with Minister Malcolm being permanently ousted from the organization. The authors rely on a litany of FBI documents to reveal the turmoil within the Nation about Minister Malcolm. Smith and Roberts also highlight the extraordinary rage directed at Muhammad Ali once his NOI affiliations became public. White and black people publicly castigated Ali – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called him the “champion of racial segregation.” As Ali began to learn more about the global system of Racism, he reconfigured his image and how he could use his stature as a global icon. Minister Malcolm knew that he was targeted for death. Again, this text should highlight the importance of not name-calling black people.
