The C.O.W.S. w/ Marybeth Gasman: White Supremacy University

Monday, October 17th 8:00PM Eastern/ 5:00PM Pacific

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Marybeth Gasman. A professor in the Graduate School of Education and director of the Penn Center for Minority Serving Institutions, Gasman holds secondary appointments in history, Africana studies, and the School of Social Policy and Practice at Penn. We’ll discuss an essay she recently authored, which bluntly explains how Whites deliberately block black people from obtaining faculty jobs at historically White academic institutions. The deceptive use of words is a key component. The caused such a kerfuffle, The Washington Post published a follow-up report sharing some of the comments generated by Gasman’s essay. A black female with a PhD wrote: “despite having terrific credentials and applying for over 200 faculty positions, I have been denied for a faculty position over and over, making me wonder if pursuing a PhD was worth it. … I wonder if I should discourage other African Americans from doing so.”
