New Abolitionists Radio: Less Than A Month Away From A Mass Abolitionist Movement In Washington, DC


Today is the July 26th, 2017 broadcast of New Abolitionists Radio. We are less than a month away from the MILLIONS FOR PRISONERS HUMAN RIGHTS MARCH ON WASHINGTON, DC August 19th. The largest gathering of Slavery Abolitionists in US history.

• On this day in History, 1847 The Republic of Liberia, formerly a colony of the American Colonization Society, declares its independence. Under pressure from Britain, the United States hesitantly accepted Liberian sovereignty, making the West African nation the first democratic republic in African history. A constitution modeled after the U.S. Constitution was approved, and in 1848 Joseph Jenkins Roberts was elected Liberia’s first president.

Also on this day On July 26, 1908, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is born when U.S. Attorney General Charles Bonaparte orders a group of newly hired federal investigators to report to Chief Examiner Stanley W. Finch of the Department of Justice. One year later, the Office of the Chief Examiner was renamed the Bureau of Investigation, and in 1935 it became the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

• Our Abolitionist in Profile will be Ohio abolitionist Levi Coffin. In 1854, he helped found an African American orphanage in Cincinnati. He also pressured the federal government during the Civil War to establish the Freedmen’s Bureau. In addition, Coffin helped African Americans establish their own businesses and obtain educational opportunities.

• Our Rider of the 21st Century Underground Railroad is Ralph Wright Jr. was exonerated and released from Florida’s death row on July 20th, 2017 after a circuit court acquitted him of a 2007 double murder.

• In the segment ‘For Freedom’s Sake. A History of Rebellion.’ We will be remembering The July 13th, 1863 New York City Draft Riots massacre.
