The C.O.W.S. Frantz Fanon THE WRETCHED OF THE EARTH Part 2

Friday, August 4th 8:00PM Eastern/ 5:00PM Pacific

The Context of White Supremacy hosts the second study session on Frantz Fanon’s 1961 landmark book, The Wretched of the Earth. Born in Martinique in 1925, Fanon became globally recognized psychiatrist and committed his 36 years of life to ending White rule. He fought for Algerian independence from French colonial rule, and black liberation world wide. Fanon also authored Black Skin, White Mask, which is a psychoanalysis of the perversions and neurosis of sexual activity between Whites and black people. Interestingly, Fanon himself was married to a White woman. The writer and psychiatrist died from leukemia the same year The Wretched of the Earth was published. Last week’s session examined the preface, written by Jean-Paul Sartre. A prominent White intellectual of the 1960’s, Sartre’s introduction shares buckets of words and, in between, a few morsels of truth about White power. Sartre acknowledges Racists often find comfort watching black people shout about about our oppression or seek solace in the ancient African traditions. Listeners speculated that Sartre encouraged Whites to read this text to refine their understanding of Black thought.
