New Abolitionists Radio: Slavery Is A Global Enterprise

Today is the November 29th, 2017 broadcast of New Abolitionists Radio.

• On this day in 1864 Colonel John Chivington and his 700 Colorado volunteers, many of them drunk, attacked the sleeping village at Sand Creek. Most of the Cheyenne men were away hunting, so the women, children, and elders were largely defenseless. In the frenzied slaughter that followed, Chivington and his men killed more than 100 women and children and 28 men. Black Kettle escaped the attack. The soldiers scalped and mutilated the corpses, hacking off body parts that included male and female genitals, and then returned to Denver where they displayed the scalps to approving crowds during intermission at a downtown theatre.

• In our sights tonight are Baltimore and Ohio. As always, we’ll have discussions, examine current news, and connect all the dots about modern legalized slavery for you in a nice neat bow.

• Our Abolitionist in Profile tonight is Frances E.W. Harper. Abolitionist, Poet, Activist (1825–1911).

• In the segment ‘For Freedom’s Sake. A History of Rebellion.’ We will remember Gabriel’s Conspiracy of August 30th, 1800 and the call of “Death or Liberty”

• Our Rider of the 21st Century Underground Railroad is Baltimore’s Sabein Burgess who was released from prison in 2015 after the wrongful conviction for the 1994 murder of his then-girlfriend Michelle Dyson. This month A federal jury awarded him $15 million after spending more than two decades wrongly incarcerated for murder.
