The C.O.W.S. w/ Darline Turner: A Health Crisis for Pregnant Black Mothers?

Monday, December 11th 8:00PM Eastern/ 5:00PM Pacific

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Darline Turner. An Austin-based physician’s assistant and certified doula, Ms. Turner founded the Healing Hands Doula Project to support “healthy pregnancies and births for women of color in Texas.” Additionally, she hosts the Mamas on Bedrest & Beyond podcast, which is designed to “provide new mamas tips and information on topics ranging from prenatal nausea to post partum depression to infant teething.” Turner said the astonishing levels of maternal mortality rates for black females in Texas prompted her to action. Ms. Turner offers resources for new parents and helps to put expecting mothers in touch with doulas. We’ll discuss nutrition tips for mothers who intend to breast feed and inquire about ways of minimizing invasive and unnecessary surgeries. A small number of C.O.W.S. listeners contend that Racists fabricated statistics to suggest that a crisis exists for pregnant black mothers. We’ll get Ms. Turner’s assessment of this incredulous response.
