Properly Formatting & Engineering MP3 Podcasts

This tutorial shows you how to properly format or edit mp3 files using all free software tools.

Metadata is data that describes other data. Meta is a prefix that in most information technology usages means “an underlying definition or description.” Metadata summarizes basic information about data, which can make finding and work with particular instances of data easier. – WhatIs.com

Many talk podcasters and music artists that distribute their files over the Internet often neglect to add metadata to their mp3 files. Metadata is also referred to as ID3 tags and as the “ID” implies, it identifies information about the mp3 files when playing in media players or being played by online radio stations.

The type of data one might include in an mp3 file or talk podcast are images, a title, artist/host information, and descriptions. There are a number of ways and different software programs that can embed metadata in mp3 files but MP3Tag editor is one of the best by far.

When producing talk podcasts, for tracking the downloads of mp3 files you upload to the internet on any platform, it is extremely important to organize your podcasts in series and you do that by renaming your raw or edited mp3 files with the podcast show name which will always be the same, the date your podcast was produced and other identifiers you may want to add like the title of the podcast or guest names. Audacity is free audio editing software that can be used to engineer audio files like inserting audio tracks and entering MP3 tags but it does not insert the podcast image logo or album art which is why we use MP3 Tag editor.

FormatFactory is an ad-supported freeware multimedia converter that can convert video, audio, and picture files. It is also capable of ripping DVDs and CDs to other file formats, as well as creating .iso images. It can also join multiple video files together into one.
