The Context of White Supremacy hosts the fifth study session on Angie Thomas’s universally celebrated young adult novel, The Hate U Give. Supposedly inspired by the 2009 police killing of Oscar Grant, Thomas’s work “debuted at the top of The New York Times’s Young Adult best-seller list, and has drawn ecstatic praise from critics, librarians, book sellers and prominent young-adult novelists,” writes The Times’s Alexandra Alter. After more than a year, The Hate U Give remains a fixture on The Times’s young adult bestseller list and is being fitted for a major motion picture featuring The Hunger Games’s Amandla Stenberg. Last week’s segment offered another hardy heap of anti-blackness. Starr gushes over her White boyfriend Chris, while simultaneously announcing her sexual attraction to her White female classmate, Jess. Starr’s father Maverick, the character Thomas describes as her favorite, continues to be neutered. A black police officer forces him on the ground in front of his children, and his wife foreshadows that she might have plans to relocate the children without his consent. Between junk food and prayers to “black jesus,” readers are bludgeoned with stories of black death and pathology. White characters like Jess and Chris becomes sexually appealing representations of “normalcy.”
