The C.O.W.S. Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man Part 6

Friday, June 8th 8:00PM Eastern/ 5:00PM Pacific

The Context of White Supremacy hosts the sixth study session on Ralph Ellison’s 1952 masterpiece, Invisible Man. Gus T’s all-time favorite book, Ellison’s novel was selected for the 1953 National Book Award and has been dissected and lionized around the world for nearly 75 years. The tale follows an unnamed black male as he toils through the chaos and mistreatment of White Supremacy (Racism). Last week’s installment saw our narrator learn that he would never return to his black college in the south. Having the veil lifted, the protagonist turns his attention to getting a job. He takes employment at Liberty Paints, where’s blasted by black and white workers alike. Lucius Brockway, an older black employee who works in the bowels of the factory, boasts about his vital contribution to Liberty’s renowned “Optic White” paint. Brockway is paranoid that younger workers – including the narrator – are out to take his job. The White workers hate Brockway and are all but convinced the main character is a snitch. The first day on the job ends with the protagonist knocked senseless by an explosion – engineered by Brockway – at the plant.
