The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Charles K. Hyde. Dr. Hyde received his Bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Massachusetts in 1966 and his Ph.D. in Economic History from the University of Wisconsin in 1971. He taught at Boston University and Wayne State University before retiring in May 2010. He’s published a litany of work detailing the history and evolution of the automobile industry. We’ll discuss his most recent publication Arsenal of Democracy: The American Automobile Industry in World War II. Dr. Hyde documents the spectacular effort Whites made to mass produce planes, tanks, jeeps and firearms to challenge the Axis Powers. To produce the abundance of Weapons of Mass Destruction, a gargantuan labor force was required; “all hands on deck” mandated that Whites employ White Women and black people. Dr. Hyde will outline how Racists responded to black laborers who contributed to the Allied victory. The second portion of the program is devoted to coverage of the St. Louis Riots; we’ll have updates from St. Louis listeners.
