The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Gavin S. Johnson. Mr. Johnson is a New Orleans resident and a hospital and health care professional. We’ll discuss his autobiography, Prisoners of Katrina: Stranded at Work in New Orleans Parish Prison. Mr. Johnson brought his elderly father with him to work with him at the prison on August 28th, 2005. The toxic flood waters arrived the following day. He recounts a dizzying scene of a flooding penitentiary, guards deserting their posts, sick prisoners, brawling prisoners, and no communication or backup. Mr. Johnson makes note of being one of the few whitefolks in this stressful environment. We’ll discuss his thoughts on the 10 year anniversary of levee breech and the alleged recovery of the “Crescent City.”
