The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Kristen Green. A journalist by trade, Ms. Green is a Virginia native who adjusted her life to research the historic five year school closure in Prince Edward County. Following the 1954 Brown v Board of Education decision, Whites in Southside Virginia devoted themselves to White Supremacy in education. They plotted, secured funding, and eventually closed all public schools in the county from 1959 to 1964. They opened private academies for White children during the period, while leaving black children and educators to rot without education. Ms. Green’s book – Something Must Be Done About Prince Edward County – explores the details of this historic act of war and her family’s involvement in the closing of the schools. Her White grandfather championed keeping black students away from white students and served as a faculty member for the White Supremacy academies for years. Her memoir suggests that mosts Whites in the area are not greatly and sincerely pained about their actions – even a half century later.
