The C.O.W.S. THE BREAKTHROUGH Part 1

Friday, December 9th 8:00PM Eastern/ 5:00PM Pacific

the-breakthrough-gwen-ifillThe Context of White Supremacy hosts the debut study session on Gwen Ifill’s 2009 publication, The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama. An award-winning journalist and anchor at PBS, Ifill, 61, died from cancer in November of this year. Ifill was one of a limited number of black female journalists, and she admitted that Racism impacted her career. It may have been a factor in her passing at such a young age. In The Breakthrough, Ifill unpacks the significance of Barack Obama winning the 2008 presidential election. Her analysis looks at the history and evolution of White Supremacy in this part of the world and how Racism became a central issue in the election. She explores the kerfuffle involving Pres. Obama’s relationship with Rev. Jeremiah Wright and how having a White parent influenced perception and opinion of the Illinois senator.  We hope this reading will honor Ifill’s life and work, and we’ll take the chance to compare the beginning of the “Obama Administration” with the rise of President-elect Donald J. Trump.
