Friday, May 5th 8:00PM Eastern/ 5:00PM Pacific

The Context of White Supremacy hosts the sixth study session on the 2017 autobiography of the late Coretta Scott King, My Life, My Love, My Legacy. It’s been eleven years since Mrs. King passed away in January 2006. Before her transition, the civil rights icon partnered with acclaimed journalist, Rev. Dr. Barbara Reynolds. The New Orleans Tribune encourages everyone to read this book, calling it a timely read for the current climate of hostility and “emboldened” White Supremacy. Last week’s session chronicled the Dr. King’s Chicago campaign for better housing and public service for black residents of the “Windy City.” Mrs. King describes how the abysmal conditions of their shabby apartment, which was a better property than what most black Chicagoans could access. Mrs. King documented the unabashed terrorism they were subjected to by northern Whites. Last weeks segment also detailed the April 4th 1968 assassination of Dr. King. Mrs. King provides an unflinching description of her young children discovering that their father had been murdered. Harry Belafonte, Andrew Young and others offered generous support and encouragement to the King family. Former Attorney General Bobby Kennedy, who authorized COINTELPRO wire taps of Dr. King, delivered extra phone lines to the King residence to help Mrs. King handle the astronomical volume of calls. We’ll compare this text to other autobiographies covered on the book club – Maya Angelou, Assata Shakur, Malcolm X.
