The C.O.W.S. w/ Dr. Thomas A. Foster: Sexual Abuse of Black Male Slaves

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Thomas A. Foster. The associate dean for faculty affairs in the College of Arts and Sciences at Howard University and a professor in the department of history, Dr. Foster’s fields of study include gender, sexuality, slavery, and U.S. slavery. Dr. Foster first came to our attention courtesy of Dr. Tommy Curry, who regularly references Dr. Foster’s 2011 report, “The Sexual Abuse of Black Men Under American Slavery.” The much anticipated full length investigation of this topic, Rethinking Rufus: Sexual Violations of Enslaved Men, was published earlier this year. We’ll explore how White Women and White Men sexually terrorized black males at will. Dr. Foster points to routine fetishization of black male bodies during this time – which included keeping them a few stitches of cloth from being naked. Having one’s body exposed, penetrated or required to penetrated was a routine component of male slave life.
