The C.O.W.S. Hurricane Ida: Why Are Whites Calling This “Katrina’s Anniversary”?

Tuesday, August 30th 8:00PM Eastern/ 5:00PM Pacific

The Context of White Supremacy examines the catastrophe in Louisiana where Hurricane Ida is pummeling the region. This storm – described as the most powerful to touch Louisiana since 1850, touched down 16 years to the day since Hurricane Katrina and the levee failure. With more than 1,000 black people perishing during the first week of the storm, the 2005 catastrophe remains one of the deadliest occurrences in U.S. history. The C.O.W.S. hosted numerous authors, filmmakers and Katrina survivors to better understand how White Supremacists, not the toxic flood waters or failed levees, were the biggest problem. As of August 30th, the entire city of New Orleans is without power. 911 calls are suspended in some areas of the state. Gus will remind listeners that White Supremacists love and exploit chaotic environments like this. With such upheaval, black people are extremely vulnerable.
