Marissa Alexander, the Florida mother who fired a warning shot in the direction of an abusive husband is being threatened with 60 years in prison if she is convicted after her retrial. Alexander won a new trial after being convicted on three counts of aggravated assault. She was sentenced to 20 years on each count, which ran concurrently. Now prosecutors are claiming that the state attorney, Angela Corey, has directed them to seek to have the sentences run consecutively meaning one-sentence starts after one sentence ends.
Observers see the threat as vindictiveness on the part of Angela Corey while others see it as a tactic used by prosecutors all over the country to scare defendants into taking plea deals instead of going to trial.
In a press release, advocates for Alexander called the threat of 60 years a “stunning abuse of power”,
“Demonstrating a stunning abuse of power, Florida State Prosecutor, Angela Corey, announced that she aims to increase the prison sentence for Marissa Alexander from 20 to 60 years in the upcoming July 28th trial.”
Members of Free Marissa Now also state that they believe state prosecutor Corey is seeking to shield herself from criticism that she mishandled the cases of George Zimmerman who was found not guilty of murdering Florida teen Trayvon Martin and more recently the failure to secure a conviction for the murder of Jordan Davis, another Florida unarmed teen who was gunned down.
“Sumayya Fire and other members of Free Marissa Now believe that Angela Corey has launched a campaign of escalating punishment of Marissa Alexander to shield herself from charges of mishandling trials and failing to secure guilty verdicts for the murders of black teens, Jordan Davis and Trayvon Martin, in addition to various lawsuits targeting her office for misconduct, and criticism for a pattern of maliciously over-charging defendants in order to bully them into plea bargains.”
