The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Brad Bushman. Dr. Bushman is a Professor of Communication and Psychology and the Margaret Hall and Robert Randal Rinehart Chair of Mass Communication at Ohio State University. He also teaches communication science at VU University Amsterdam. He has investigated the correlation between violent media and aggression as well as violent perpetrators and self esteem. He recently co-authored a study of violent video games and racial attitudes. The results suggested that games featuring violent black characters reinforce Racist Constructs of blacks as dangerous, volatile and threatening. Their data also suggests that White gamers show stronger Racist attitudes towards black people after playing a violent game as a black character. Predictably, many Whites have vehemently condemned Dr. Bushman’s interpretation as being irresponsible and inaccurate. We’ll see why Dr. Bushman is investigating this aspect of Racism, and if game-makers will alter their depiction of black characters in accordance with his findings.
