The Context of White Supremacy hosts the fifth study session on Rebecca Skloot‘s bestselling debut, The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks. Henrietta Lacks was a black mother of five children who labored through cervical cancer; she died in 1951. Suspected Racists in White lab coats looted genetic material from her without permission and have used her cells – code-named HeLa – to produce indefinite amounts of vaccines, cancer medications, in vitro fertilization, gene mapping and cloning – mostly to help Whites. Neither Ms. Lacks or her black family members were compensated for this likely act of “medical apartheid;” her relatives were not informed of this corruption until twenty years after her death. Suspected Race Scientists continued their immoral legacy by conducting research on her children – also without consent. Last week’s session continued the pattern of Skloot sidetracking the narrative to highlight black dysfunction. The White author included a prison letter – in poor English – written by Lacks’ offspring after he killed a black male. She documented continued domestic abuse, brawls, poor medical care and lack of education that plagued the Lacks’ family. It’s unclear how this advances a book that is ostensibly focused on the contributions and significance of HeLa cells. As Skloot is a White Woman, we’ll remain hyper-vigilant for the influence of her likely Racist perspective on the structure of this publication.
