8 PM EST - “The last four or five hundred years of European contact with Africa produced a body of literature that presented Africa in a very bad light and Africans in very lurid terms. The reason for this had to do with the need to justify the slave trade and slavery.” - Chinua Achebe
The Context of White Supremacy welcomes M. Kevin Kelley. Mr. Kelley – whom I suspect is a black male – commented on Michael Sam, the first openly gay male drafted by the N.F.L.: Any person of color that took issue with
#MichaelSam being drafted & kissing a man afterwards just remember your own history. Gus found this statement odd. Like so much commentary of late, it suggests that there’s something uniquely homophobic about black people (people of color). As Marshall Henderson illustrates, there have been plenty of Whites who have publicly expressed their disdain for Michael Sam’s celebratory smooch; it seemed incorrect to focus solely on “people of color” as proprietors of “homophobia”. We look forward to asking Mr. Kelley if he has witnessed black people harming people because they identify as “gay” or if he has any evidence of Mr. Sam being mistreated by other black people.
