If you are awarded a grammy, you are considered to be the best artist among your peers. The problem is, the Grammys is a white-dominated organization and while it has long "included" non-white people, specifically Black people in the music business, the industry continues to support, promote and reward music that is harmful to black people in general and black women and girls specifically.

The Context of White Supremacy hosts the fourth study session on Angie Thomas’s bestselling young adult novel, The Hate U Give. Allegedly penned in response to the 2009 police killing of Oscar Grant, Thomas’s work “debuted at the top of The New York Times’s Young Adult best-seller list, and has drawn ecstatic praise from critics, librarians, book sellers and prominent young-adult novelists,” says The Times’s Alexandra Alter. After a year, The Hate U Give remains on The Times’s bestseller list and is being converted to a major motion picture starring The Hunger Games’s Amandla Stenberg. Last week’s session detailed an especially tacky scene: Khalil’s funeral. During this moment readers are informed that Starr’s father Maverick cheated on her mother and sired a child with a sex worker. Gang members interrupt the proceedings and near brawl ensues near the casket. In between commentary on the drug-selling, fried chicken eating black people, Starr continues to rave about her flawless White boyfriend, Chris. While all of the main black characters are majorly flawed. Chris remains a sparkling example of a character without flaws.
