The Context of White Supremacy hosts the third study session on legendary poet, author, scholar, mother, sexual abuse survivor and Victim of White Supremacy Dr. Maya Angelou. Dr. Angelou passed away in May of 2014. We felt it necessary to pay tribute to her autobiographical counter Racist efforts. We’ll examine her 1969 novel, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. The text is an unflinching account of Racism and her Arkansas childhood. Last week’s session highlighted the central role of the Christian Church in her life. She narrated a raucous revival setting where the White Terrorism that black congregations labored under was made bearable with the belief that White Jesus and White Heaven awaited them in the afterlife. Dr. Angelou also dedicated a complete chapter to the symbolism and pride former heavy weight champion Joe Louis inspired in black people around the world. We’ll continue to note the sway of White God as we read, and we’ll contemplate why many White people seem to admire and advertise this work.
